Just now an
idea came to me of creating a school that teaches one why one should and how to
become a vegan. This school could be an online only school or both online and physical
school. I got the idea for this school after watching the film, Vegucation,
where three participants who follow an omnivore diet are asked to follow a
vegan diet for 6 weeks. Along the way they are given a crash course in the
vegan lifestyle and diet, and are shown how animals are harmed at
slaughterhouses. At the end of the film most of the participants have vowed to
keep all or part of their newly adopted vegan lifestyle. The film made me
realize that many people may be open to a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle (more
people than I thought previously) and what people really need in order to make
lifestyle changes is someone to educate and lead them down this path. Also,
making these changes will in a support group is really important to their
success. The group reinforces the positive behavior and encourages the
participants to continue.
A vegan
school could educate about what veganism means and what its benefits are, what
is wrong with the standard American diet and the typical wasteful lifestyle. Also,
there would be field trips to slaughterhouses, animal sanctuaries, and vegan
doctors, as was shown in the film. The students would be shown what food stores
to shop at and what foods to shop for, and how to prepare the vegan foods in
tasty and satisfying ways at home. Classes would also be given on how to grow
your own foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and herbs. Paramount to the
curriculum would be instilling a sense of compassion for all living beings in
the students since that is how we naturally are as humans.
Also, I realized that people adopting a vegan lifestyle is probably the most crucial thing we as humans can do to help our and the planet’s longterm survivability. In fact, the film makes a point of this by showing how consuming meat produces the most greenhouse gases, and changing to a vegan diet will take more CO2 out of the atmosphere than changing from a typical to a hybrid car. So, creating an easy to access vegan education system would really make big positive changes for the planet, fewer animals would be slaughtered, and obviously big health improvements for many people. A win win for all!
If you read this article and decide to
start a vegan school, please feel free to give me credit for the idea. Thank
you!
